SYNOPSIS

« The Great Wave off Kanagawa » is Hokusai’s most famous print. But its creator, like the rest of his prolific body of work, has remained in the shadow of this now iconic image. Yet the unique work of this « old fool of drawing », as he called himself, deserves our attention.

Landscape prints, including the 36 Views of Mount Fuji series to which The Wave belongs, sit alongside other sublime representations of life, forming a dazzling collection. Discovered by Europe, and in particular by French artistic circles shortly after his death in 1849, he fascinated with his lines and the colors of his prints, becoming a source of inspiration for Monet, Degas, Cézanne, Van Gogh and Bonnard, and gaining worldwide fame.
