SYNOPSIS

This two-part documentary series explores the omerta surrounding the Le Scouarnec case, one of the largest child abuse scandals in French  history, through two parallel yet deeply intertwined spheres: the hospital  institution and the private family circle.

« The Medical Circle, » the first installment of the series, investigates the mechanisms of silence at work within the hospital system. It reveals how public hospitals and medical authorities covered for Joël Le Scouarnec following his 2005 conviction for possession of child pornography. Despite this warning sign, he continued to practice without restrictions, protected by institutional inertia and medical corporatism. The episode highlights the systemic failures and the multiple levels of responsibility that allowed Joël Le Scouarnec to continue his crimes with total impunity.

« The Family Circle, » the second documentary, explores Joël Le Scouarnec’s domestic world. It sheds light on the weight of silence and toxic loyalty within a family confronted with pedophilia. This silence, which became complicit, allowed his criminality to persist even in the operating rooms. These acts could have been stopped, and many assaults avoided, if only someone had spoken up. The film reveals the gears of psychological grip and secrecy that prevent victims from speaking out and loved ones from hearing them. Every suspicion was brushed aside; every word was silenced or downplayed. This silence was not just a refusal to see, but a collective defense mechanism where the unspeakable remained hidden to preserve the family’s image. This second film interrogates the weight of denial, family loyalty, and the dizzying sting of betrayal.

Mirrored against one another, these two parts recount a single tragedy: that of a double-sided silence, the institution and the clan, which together made the unthinkable possible.
